Abstract
Shuya Abe (Abe) was born in Miyagi, Japan in 1932. Abe studied Communication Engineering at Tohoku University.
Working as a technical staff at the Tokyo Broadcasting Systems, Abe first met Nam June Paik (NJP) in 1963. Since then, Abe had provided technical support in creating NJP’s electronic art work. Major collaborative works include Paik-Abe Video Synthesizer (1969) and Robot K-456 (1964).

Retired from Tokyo Broadcasting Systems in 1970, Abe was invited by WGBH-TV in Boston. Abe moved to the US and got a position at Mixed Media Lab, California Institute of the Arts, where he worked with Allan Kaprow and Morton Subotnik. Recognized his contribution to Video Art, Abe received JDR 3rd Fund Grant.

Abe moved back to Tokyo in 1972, and restarted his career in Toyo Laboratory in Tokyo. In 1992, Abe completed his career as an engineer at IMAGICA. After retirement, Abe taught some classes at Musashino Art University.

Abe was a good friend of NJP as well as an excellent collaborative technician. NJP once wrote an article regarding Abe, “Mr. Abe – The Greatest Doctor for Me.”
