- Scope
- The Gallery Won (the Gallery) collection spans the years 1973-1993 (bulk 1988-1992) and consists of 2.5 cubic meter of records collected by the Gallery. The collection reflects collaboration between the Gallery and Nam June Paik (NJP). The collection includes media materials collected for exhibitions at the Gallery; objects that NJP gathered for his artwork installation; and publications that NJP gifted. Included in the collection are interview footage of NJP, NJP video art work pieces, documentary film of Merce Cunningham, objects gathered for NJP’ artwork, and publications gifted by NJP.
The collection is divided into three series: Series 1. Audio-Visual; Series 2. Object; and Series 3. Publications. Series 1. Audio-Visual includes NJP interview produced by KBS (1992), NJP’s video art works distributed by EAI, documentary films of Merce Cunningham, and documentary piece of Joseph Beuys. It consists of BetaCam, Film reel, and VHS. It also contains digital files of photographs that Ki-yong Jung from the Gallery possesses. Series 2. Objects, gathered for NJP’s artwork installation, is comprised of antique TV cases, a bicycle, a small totem, and sign board from <Seoul Fluxus Festival> in 1993 having signatures of participating artists including NJP, Philip Corner, Dick Higgins, and F. Conz, among others. Series 3. contains a catalogue of fluxus exhibition and eight copies of signed < Du cheval à Christo et autres écrits >. Each item is arranged alphabetically by format and then by title.
Highlights of the collection include the sign board of <Seoul Fluxus Festival> in 1993; NJP’s interview footage aired via KBS; and out of print publications < 1962 Wiesbaden Fluxus 1982 > and < Du cheval à Christo et autres écrits >.
- Abstract
- Since its opening in 1978, Gallery Won has organized exhibitions of Korean contemporary artists as well as internationally renowned artists, introduced foreign-based Korean artists to Korean art scene, and supported emerging artists. Gallery Won also provides multi/cross-genre art featured space. The gallery relocated from Insa-dong to Chungdam-dong in 1994.
Organizing and planning solo exhibitions as well as group exhibitions with Nam June Paik in the late 1980’s and the early 1990’s, Gallery Won presented <Nam June Paik: A Pas de loup de Seoul a Budapes> in 1990 and <Beuys Vox> in 1988.
Ki-yong Jung from Gallery Won is a friend of Nam June Paik, who introduced Nam June to Korea for the first time in 1984. He has collected artwork through his life and supported several exhibitions on John Cage, Joseph Beuys, and Fluxus artists.
