- Description
- Video Chandelier No. 1 is composed of small CRT TV sets and switched-on bulbs, along the tangled-up cables dangling from the ceiling like a chandelier. Though black-and-white monitors are used in Video Chandelier No. 1, the surface of televisions and colorful lights of bulbs, entangled with cables, create a lavish atmosphere around this funnel like work. The video chandelier series produced afterwards have more ornamental features like crystal and plant embellishments and furniture-like elements, so they appear more like real chandeliers. The first chandelier, however, achieved the aesthetic composition only with electric and electronic components, and thus can be said to be most true to Paik’s media art. The screen images are in black and white unlike other versions, and this has the effect of highlighting all the more kinetic feel of moving images.
