Description
Nam June Paik wrote the Chinese phrase, “晴耕雨讀,” which means ‘working in the field in fine weather and reading at home in wet weather,’ while mistakenly reversing the left and right sides of the character “耕.” Next to this phrase, Paik added the character “夾,” which refers to ‘breaking in,’ indicating that reading comes first, before farming. Stacked books are seen in the middle, along with the phrase “階書,” which means ‘to read books in piles’. The first phrase of the Thousand Character Classic, “天地玄黃,” can be seen on the left. With raindrops in several colors falling over the drawing, the character “晴 (to clear up)” is circled and connected with arrows pointing at the sun on the upper-left corner, where people are working in the field under the sun on a fine day.
