Description
When John Cage passed away in 1992, Nam June Paik organized a memorial exhibition at Gallery Won and left a short message of remembrance on a fan handcrafted by Lee Han-kyu, the fan artisan of Seocheon. On the large black fan, Paik wrote a Chinese phrase meaning “homecoming after one resigns from government service.” In addition to this fan, Paik created calligraphic works of Korean phrases such as “Coming, Going, Again” and “The Wind, the Wind,” as well as other related pieces. Paik wrote how influential Cage was in his life, noting that his life before meeting Cage was B.C. (Before Cage), and his life after Cage’s death was A.D. (After Death).
